OWOWWW Creative Brings Leslie Cheung’s Legacy to the Sky

On 12 September 2026, the night sky above Hong Kong became a canvas of light as OWOWWW Creative took part in the special celebration of Leslie Cheung’s 70th birthday, delivering a spectacular drone light show as part of the “Miss You Much · Leslie Cheung 70th Birthday Concert” (《繼續寵愛・張國榮70誕辰・音樂會》) at Art Park, West Kowloon Cultural District.

For a performer whose music, films and stage presence have remained deeply embedded in Hong Kong popular culture, the celebration called for more than a conventional performance. The drone show transformed the night sky into a moving tribute, connecting technology, music and visual storytelling in a celebration dedicated to Leslie Cheung.

1,956 Drones in the Hong Kong Night Sky

On 12 September, 1,956 drones took flight above Hong Kong.

The number was carefully chosen to represent 1956, the birth year of Leslie Cheung, while the 9:12 performance time reflected the special date of his 70th birthday.

Working as one coordinated formation, the drones created a series of visual moments inspired by Leslie Cheung’s iconic image, career and cultural legacy. From recognisable silhouettes and stage-related elements to the final birthday celebration, each formation was designed to turn familiar memories into large-scale aerial artwork.

The performance lasted approximately 9 minutes and 12 seconds, creating a visual connection between the date, the artist and the numbers that hold special meaning for his fans.

From Music to Light: Turning Leslie Cheung’s Legacy into Aerial Art

Leslie Cheung’s music provided an important creative foundation for the show.

Songs and memories spanning different stages of his career — including “Monica”, “風繼續吹”, “為你鍾情” and “由零開始” — became part of the emotional atmosphere surrounding the performance.

Rather than simply displaying images in the sky, the drone choreography was developed to create a visual journey. Thousands of individual points of light moved together to form recognisable shapes, symbols and scenes, allowing the audience to experience familiar memories in a completely different medium.

The result was a meeting point between Hong Kong pop culture, music and drone technology.

A Tribute to a Hong Kong Icon

Leslie Cheung remains one of the most influential figures in Hong Kong music and cinema. His work continues to reach audiences across generations, with his songs, films, performances and distinctive artistic style remaining part of Hong Kong’s cultural memory.

The 2026 celebration marked his 70th birthday, with a series of commemorative activities taking place across Hong Kong, including the special concert and the “Miss You Much · Leslie Cheung 70th Birthday · Exhibition” at Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Against this cultural backdrop, the drone show offered a new way to remember Leslie Cheung — not through a traditional stage alone, but through thousands of lights moving together above one of Hong Kong’s most recognisable waterfront settings.
